Welcome to the ASPCA
Status Update
By Kara Birks
It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that all my friends here on Facebook take the time to read this for me, it won't take but 10-15 minutes of your time! :
A week ago today we had to take this poor cat to the Humane Society that had been injured in a kitty fight outside. When we took him his head was just a minor cut that could have used a stitch or 2. He was smelly like cat urine and feces, he was soaking wet and limping. When we got to the Lewiston Humane Society I had explained to them what condition the cat was in and that we had given him a bath and fed him and did the best we could to clean and address his wounds. They proceeded to tell me that they could not take him because I lived in Lisbon not Lewistion (which is the SAME COUNTY). They put me on the phone with a person they referred to as the "Animal Control Officer" of the Androscogin/Cumberland county area. The man proceeded to tell me that he did not have the funds to address the cat and that there was nothing he could do to help us. I was blown away, and the whole time they are refusing to help this poor animal, NOT ONCE did they come around the corner to even take a peak at the poor cat and see the condition that he was in. They did not CARE!! So I said "you know what this is your job, and this is what you are here for...you can KEEP the cat carrier, and I left."
1/2 hour later I got a call from this "Animal Control Officer" of ANROSCOGGIN COUNTY and he asked me about leaving the cat there. I told him I did what I did because I helped the cat the best that I could, and then brought him to professionals in order for his wounds and condition to be addressed by people that have the means to do it...which I did not. He was trying to tell me that there was nothing the Androscoggin County Shelter would or could do, and that he needed to go to the Shelter in Brunswick, Maine. I asked him "well isn't it your job technically to transport animals such as this poor kitty to the place where he belongs where help can be given to him?" He got very quiet...then he agreed that I was in fact accurate and I did the Nobel/Right things to be done in this situation, agreeing that most people would have just turned there cheek. He then told me not to worry about it from there, he had it under control and would figure "something" out. I assumed this meant that he was going to transport this poor cat to his destination......I was Wrong!
A week ago today at 11:30 a.m. my step father found the cat that we had taken to professionals (Lewiston Humane Society & Animal Control Officer) on our door step in the condition that you all see below!! That cut on his head is so wide and deep that you could put your finger in it if you tried! It has an awful odor coming from it, and he has lost sooo much weight. He had actually been set free by this POOR EXCUSE FOR AN ANIMAL RESCUE CENTER and left to survive and fight for his life on the streets of Lewiston, Maine. He found his way back to our door step through a snow storm that we all just endured from the inside, imagine surviving out there not knowing where you are or when or how you will get your next meal!!! He is still out there, he ran out the door after we gave him lots of food, and are unable to get close enough to catch him. This cat cannot find an animal shelter that he is "good enough" for.....is this seriously legal?????????????????????????!! What is the matter with the world today? If there is anyone out there who loves cats and has the money to help nurse this cat back to health and provide him with a wonderful home, I would love to hear from you. Our number is (207)407-1333, and I'm looking for help from anyone who's willing to give it. I have no cat carrier to put him in when I catch him, but this cat does not deserve to have to go through anymore bullsh*t unless it's to a vet or a place willing to treat him right!!!!!!!!! Please help This "Big Guy" he's clearly starving for love and help...we were nice for one night to him, and he traveled MILES to get back to our door step!
